In Back to the Future, what movie was playing at the movie theatre when Marty went back to 1955?

What movie was playing in 1985?

This is another one of my weekly trivia questions. First person with the correct, and most thorough answer, gets "Best Answer."

In Back to the Future, what movie was playing at the movie theatre when Marty went back to 1955?opera songs

...if I recall correctly, it was "A Boy's Life" and "Watch the Skies", which were reportedly alternate titles for the Spielberg films, "E.T.: The Extraterrestial" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"...

...there were a couple of other theatres in the 1955 town, which were playing alternate movies, I think that they were "Cattle Queen of Montana" and "The Atomic Kid", but it's been a long while since I saw "BTTF", so I really can't be too sure...

...I'm also inclined to think that the first double bill I mentioned, was actually in "Gremlins", not "BTTF"...

...in 1985, I think that the theater marquee said that the theater was closed, or was playing X-Rated movies, or something; again, I'd have to go back to the movie, for that one...

In Back to the Future, what movie was playing at the movie theatre when Marty went back to 1955?secure browser opera theater

mm I think it was a Elvis Movie but I can't remember which one or maybe a John Wayne Movie.
"Cattle Queen of Montana"
Film Jedi is correct. It's "Cattle Queen of Montana," starring Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan. That's one reason why it's funny when, a while after spotting this marquee, Marty has trouble convincing Doc Brown that Reagan is president in 1985. After all, Doc must be thinking, who'd vote for the costar of "Cattle Queen of Montana" to be president of the US? No wonder he asks whether the vice president is the equally absurd Jerry Lewis.

Are you quickly annoyed/irritated by the loud-mouths in a movie theatre?

or do you participate in the loud outbursts during a movie?

Are you quickly annoyed/irritated by the loud-mouths in a movie theatre?opera cd

I quit going to the movies. I buy the DVD and watch at home on a huge screen. Better popcorn, too, and I can have a beer or two.

Are you quickly annoyed/irritated by the loud-mouths in a movie theatre?opera singer opera theater

yes

i dont go very much anymore
Yes they are very annoying.
I do get irrtated exspecially when the people in the movie are loud mouths like Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment in "Hannah Montana"
i am quickly annoyed by all the loud-mouth, but they are everywhere, its so rude!
I hate cell phones and people who let there kids jabber jaw, and people who bring babies who cry, only to be taken to the tunnel, where their cry is amplified. The best thing about it is that you can get uppity with them, and they can't say anything, because the whole theatre is on your side.
It drives me nuts. And my boyfriend is one of them. He's one of those guys who wishes they can jump in the movie and make it play out how he wants to...so annoying.
i hate when people talk during the movie!! but if something funny happens and every1 laughs then i don't mind :[}
I have had people thrown out for talking. It drives me nuts. I paid $10.50 to watch the movie not listen to who the girl next door is going to have sex with.
yES THIS OLD MAN BEHIND ME SLEPT THROUGH T HE WHOLE THING!!!! LOL PLZ ANSWER MINE http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
I'm quickly annoyed, by those that make noise. And don't let me hear what's going on in the movie.
one reason i don't to movies unless it's not crowded, too many people crave attention and don't care about anyone else
participate, i hope you will participate with me!!!!!!
I hate that, that's why I only go to the matinee, those loud

mouth only come out at night.

???
I get mad when people suck their teeth when I'm talking on my cell phone in the theatre. They should learn some manners.
i dont like anyone talking during a movie, if the movie is really good - even ppl with me. lol the atmosphere is half the reason i enjoy going so much, to get lost in the movie - i dont want any commotion going on around me to remind me i am still in reality lol I know that sounds like I am a head case but it's true. lol
I can't stand it...unless they are just laughing thats fine but when they are like talking about the movie and asking questions about it and stuff. ..uggh that annoys me!
just when the movie starts. I'm always the ***** shushing everyone.
I do get frustrated, and no I never disturb others during a movie
yes but sometimes its funny
I hate it when people talk in the theater. Or if they buy a whole bunch of snacks and spend like 5 min. opening up the wrappers and crinkling them around. ERRRGGGG! It gets on my nerves.
In order to be quiet I just flash them sign language!
i participate in the talking during the movie

but im not loud

i whisper to make sure no one else can hear me
Honestly i really don't care if they want to scream doesn't bother me simply because it's not like watching a movie at home the sound is so long in the theater i usually can't even hear them being belligerent

What can be a reason to kill the main actor of a theatre play?

IDK?

What can be a reason to kill the main actor of a theatre play?chicago theater

he doesn't follow his stage directions.

What can be a reason to kill the main actor of a theatre play?met opera opera theater

He's committed a past crime and someone seeks revenge on him. Or he is a hero killed in the midst of a battle, robbery, etc.
if you wanna shock your audience by using death, it can be done in theater.
He's a bad actor.
Because the killer is the understudy? Because the co-star wants someone else in the part? Because he cannot remember his lines and the show is losing money?
what is this..? there may be several reasons.. secrets behind it.The main actor may be stumbling block to the killer. He is waiting for the opportunity to kill him. ok.. mainly ... it will not be a property matter. mainly it will not be a talent in action matter.. mainly, it will not be a competition matter..mainly it will not be a senior/junior matter.. then what ? 1. money matter....or 2. surely, no doubt a lady matter. Generally, this two reasons are the reasons to kill. ok.. you need clearcut answer. He is behind the bars. Go and ask directly, the exact reason. we don't know the correct reason.. but killer know..

Why is it unlucky to whistle in a theatre dressing room?

It's bad luck to whistle in any part of a theatre. In the old days before walkie talkies, stage hands used to communicate with each other by whistling. So if you whistled in a theatre you might inadvertently signal a set piece to fly in and someone might get taken out.

Why is it unlucky to whistle in a theatre dressing room?symphony

Why is it unlucky to whistle in a theatre dressing room?performing arts center opera theater

What a stupid superstition! Only religious people would come up with something so idiotic.
i heard you get hit with pies if you do
Of all theatre superstitions, here's one that actually has some basis in fact.

Because sailors used to commonly take jobs working the "flies" (i.e., the rigging) in theatres, and because they used to communicate with one another by whistling, it's commonly thought to be bad luck to whistle in the theatre for fear of confusing the stagehands.
Goalkeepers have to have their favourite toy in the net during a match. It's superstition. It guards afainst something bad happening.

The theatre is a shared, live, in the moment, three dimensional, unique experience. You, as an audience member, would be taking part in not only the thrill of drama and spectacle, but an art form that has been around since before there were written languages. There's an excitement to theatre, a real-time event in which anything can happen at any given moment and a vitality of living people bringing literature to life, educating, sharing, emoting, and making you laugh.

Can i use my data projector for home theatre?

Many data projectors have limited resolution, designed for VGA or SVGA standards. If you are willing to live with that, check the projector specs to make sure it will accept one of the ATSC formats as input (480i/60Hz, 480p/60Hz, 720p/60Hz or 1080i/60Hz). If it was designed primarly for computer display, it may not accept these, but many do. Unless the projector will display at least 1280x760 pixels, your home theater will not be high definition.

Can i use my data projector for home theatre?say yes

Yep. Now, it may not do deep blacks as well as a projector designed especially for home theater, but a screen with a grey tint can help there. And you may get better results using a PC as a DVD player, since the video output can be tweaked to exactly match the projector's native pixel resolution. Check out Avsforum.com for everything you could possibly want to know about projectors and home theater PCs.

I need some help setting up my home theatre....?

I have my computer hooked up to my TV so I can watch MPG's and other computer formatted files on the big screen. At present, I have a N-vidia 128 MB AGP8x video card with VGA and S-video out. The computer is hooked to TV using S-video cable. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can sit on the couch and use the computer. When watching Downloaded movies and such on the big screen, everything is fine. But....when I try to check e mail, etc., the picture is a little blurry and Text is difficult to read. Will replacing my computer's video card to one with 128 MB AGP "DVI out" and DVI cord(my TV has "DVI in") make the TV picture as sharp as that on my 17" computer monitor? More specific, will the text and e mails suddenly appear on the 50" big screen just as sharp as they do on my traditional 17" flat screen computer monitor? BTW....my motherboard does not have PCI express slot and does not appear to be able to handle a 256 MB AGP video card. My TV is capable of 1080 dpi HD.

I doubt it would help.. since you do have a graphic card.

anyways the technology you are talking is of very recent ones so there are still in transient state. and does not have a way of making the web more TV friendly

or having a lot of text to display up on tv...

All i can say is take a break form the 50" monster and check on comp after an hour or so...

or try the DVI cable..

But I DO think that your tv/comp has ENOUGH graphics to display but are just not ready for text.

I just have a suggestion ... Try WinXP Media center edition.. or hang on for couple of months and try win vista

the Media Center does have some good interface and meant for browsing things on tv (except yet for email, it is not there)

the SECOND best option is get a PROJECTOR /ones they use for presentations and hook that up to Computer, because that would and can do displaying....

though not as great as your 50"

What does it take to put on a Theatre production...lighting...props.... costumes...help!?

I have a project to do on presenting a play and I have to think about all the details of putting on a production...what do I need to consider?

What does it take to put on a Theatre production...lighting...props.... costumes...help!?plays

For the design elements your basics are lighting, sound, costumes, hair, makeup, properties, and of course scenic elements.

Depending on the production, you might also have projections or special effects (pyrotechnics, fight choreography, etc.)

If you want to get into staffing, you also have a stage manager, properties master, master electrician, sound engineer, wardrobe master, and the various crews. In small theatres, of course, you have people pulling double or triple duty on these things, but these are all jobs that need doing.

Generally you start out with a director and a theatre. They bring in a stage manager, and do casting. At the same time, designers are brought in and they begin designing the show as the casting is done. The actors are chosen and rehearsals begin. Fittings are done and the costume, scenic, and props shops start working on their tasks. The lighting and sound designers design their stuff and pass it along to be set up by the master electrician and sound engineer. The set, costumes, and props are loaded into the theatre, and when that's all set up the technical rehearsals begin. First it's just the actors getting used to the stage, while the stage manager learns the light and sound cues and calls them. After a few of those rehearsals, you begin dress rehearsals, with the actors in costume. These end up being run as though they were performances. After a couple dress rehearsals, you start performance and you have a show!

What does it take to put on a Theatre production...lighting...props.... costumes...help!?opera ticket opera theater

Cost and type of space, how to adapt the staging of the text to the room availible. Do you need to edit the play to meet a performance time which is realistic? How will you interpret the setting from what is indicated in the written text? for example will your space mean the play is better in the round or do you have a traditional procenium arch stage?

How will you get props (asking around? asking for loans from local buisness?). Publicity is a biggie, how are you going to promote through posters and flyers, how do you cover costs?

will you be giving concessions to OAPs, are you going to find sponsorship from local buisness to pay for the printing (by putting an advertisment for them on your flyer)?

Music, will it be live or fed over the sound desk? Are you lighting in an interprative way so it maximises the effect of the action on stage? What kind of effects are you trying to elicit.

Are you having music playing (in keeping with the play) whilst the audience enter. Costumes, are you doing a contempary piece or is it historic, would you hire from your local theatres costume dept? these are basic things we had to consider whilst putting on a production for a drama degree, theres lots more of course

good luck
A producer gets a show/ script/ score and the budget. He then gets a production manager and director.

A set designer then designs a set. The design is then sent to the drafts man how works out how to build it and make the parts work both in the theater and in the truck so it can be moved or toured.

They then works with the costume and or wig designer then tell their staff what to make

a lighting designer than makes a design and gives it to a production electrician (LX) how then works out how to make the design work and works with the production manager to find the hire company to supply the equipment. The prod LX then starts prepping the kit.

The sound designer works with the director to find out the required sound effects and finds them

The director works with the cast to work out how they should do there thing with stage management support. Stage mother mount keep the rest of the team informed of any changes during rehearsals (they happen lots) and get props as needed

1 week before opening a master carpenter instructs the crew how to build the set, the prod LX works with the lx crew to get the lighting rig in the air and sound rig speakers as needed.

The LX designers then focus the rig with the lx crew. The LX designer then works with the prod LX to start programming the lighting desk to the required lighting stats.

the cast then start going throw the show at slow pace so that wardrobe props lighting, sound and stage mother mother work out how to do there thing any big scein changes are ran over and over agene till it works. (This is normally when the director throws all his toys out of his pram and changes every thing) there is then dress rehearsals for the cast then it opens

Fights and like dances and worked out in rehuresl piro and flying is put in at tech rehearsals

(a)What are the characteristics of a Noh theatre play and how is it performed? (b) What symbolism is

I'm writing a play on multiculturalism for a group project and I thought it would be interesting to include theatrical techniques from different cultures.

(a)What are the characteristics of a Noh theatre play and how is it performed? (b) What symbolism is involved?binoculars

Noh is a classical Japanese performance form which combines elements of dance, drama, music and poetry into one highly aesthetic stage art. Largely based in the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, it is performed throughout the country by professional artists, mainly men, who have passed down the art among family members for numerous generations. There is also a wide following of both male and female amateurs who practice and perform its chant, dance, and instruments.

The symbolism is done thru the masks that you use during the play, those represent moods, expresions, power and all around anything the actors want to express.

Pick plays you already know you like and then use a Bolean search such as "The Beauty Queen of Leenane"+"script". You'll get a bunch of hits and then you can print them out. It also doesn't hurt to go the old fashioned route, either. Go to your local library and ask for the "Drama" section. It's completely filled with screenplays and scripts that you can borrow, already printed out, for the lovely price of free, and you can go see if that play you want is there by looking it up by Author at the Library.

How do you go about selecting a home theatre projector?

i want a decent but very affordable projector for the house but I don't know where to start on specifications. I know nothing besides lumins means something about brightness. What is the minimus I need to look for?

How do you go about selecting a home theatre projector?musicals

Hi Steve. First work out how much you are prepared to spend. then you have to decide how much your willing to pay for a screen.Do you want a fixed screen on a wall or a motorized screen that rolls up into a housing .The size of the screen will depend on the length of the room. To select a projector you should try to see a demo . of a couple of them to help you chose .If you can't do that then have a look at some of their features on the net.The DLP(digital light processing)projectors are considered to be among the best at the moment.Don't worry about the brightness of them they are all pretty much the same .It is more important to have a high contrast ratio and resolution.SHARP make some very good projectors at affordable prices.Hope this has been some help for you.

How do you go about selecting a home theatre projector?opera songs opera theater

for one, make sure it's HDTV compatible! Apart from that a lot depends on where you want to use it... If you're only going to use it in a relatively small room that you can darken well there's no point in buying something that works in a 2000 seat lecture hall...
You need to go to a store and see some actually working. Here's what I think you'll find...

Even the best projectors (about $40,000) suck in comparison to a good plasma or LCD tv. Also, you'll need to have a totally dark room all the time to see the image. An inexpensive projector is probably the worst choice of all possible video images, so test before you buy.

It takes anywhere from 4 -6 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. It really depends on the severity of the HLHS. He had a BT Shunt at 3 weeks and his "full repair" at 9 months - it took exactly 6 hours.

What is the best way to get cheap theatre tickets in London?

We are planning a trip there in June. We're very interested in seeing the musicals Wicked and The Lord of the Rings. Also would like to see Equus. Should we book in advance? Wait until we are there and go to the box office or a ticket agency??

What is the best way to get cheap theatre tickets in London?mr messed up

You're asking about two conflicting things here--CHEAP tickets and AVAILABLE tickets to three very popular shows.

If you want to guarantee you get to see them all, get tickets in advance. Either use a travel agent to book you a package or find the theatres themselves on the internet and use a credit card to book tickets over the phone.

If you want to see them cheaply, you can shoot for last-minute ("standby") tickets. If you or a member of your party is a student, theatres in the UK also sometimes have cheaper tickets (especially on standby) for that population. In either case, students or no, ask the individual theatres what their standby policies are. Many theatres keep a number of tickets to release on standby a matter of hours or minutes before curtain. Some theatres also sell in this manner the last-minute tickets of patrons who don't show up.

However, cheap is going to equal risky and time-consuming--you trade price for the high probability that what you want to see won't be available, or that you might have to queue for a while to get your tickets. Tickets for those particular shows are going to be very popular--especially for Equus as long as Mr. Radcliffe's appearing--so there are likely to be fewer cheapies. After all, theatres know they can sell the seats for higher prices and still sell out. You'll have to decide for yourself whether you priority is the price or guaranteed seats or time invested.

One last bit of advice--remember that if you buy anything directly from overseas, including tickets, you're affected by the exchange rates at the time of your purchase. That's not such a big deal for small items, but could potentially be a big price change for several tickets bought for several shows that expensive. If you buy from here, it might be worth your while to keep an eye on the exhange rates for a couple days prior to purchase.

What is the best way to get cheap theatre tickets in London?getting late opera theaterThanx so much for all the suggestions. I wanted to see We Will Rock You last year but ticket prices were sky high to pre-book, so I found out about the TKTS booth in Leicester Square and decided to hold out and see if they had the tickets I wanted. Luckily they did and I got them for half the price I would have had to pay elsewhere!
why not search in google
Look in the papers. They usually have package deals which include the theatre tickets and accomodation.
If you want to see a specific show you should always book in advance in order to guarantee you'll see it.

What is the acceptable dress code for the theatre?

do you have to dress up these days? - how informal can you be?

What is the acceptable dress code for the theatre?playhouse

I went a few weeks ago, and wore a casual skirt and blouse....I guess it is what some might call "business casual"

What is the acceptable dress code for the theatre?plays opera theater

This is the 21st century. You can wear anything from casual to formal.
I've been to the theatre and I wore nice pants and a nice top. It's typically not good etiquette to wear jeans.

Basically, dress like you were going for a job interview.
It kind of depends on what kind of theatre and what kind of play you are going to. If it is a play at a high school or something, you can definitely go very casual. If it is a community theatre of some sort you can be casual to business casual. If it is broadway, dress up! have fun
formal/business attire, smart casual or semi-formal (rarely used)
I once went wearing a tight red bodysuit and a prosthetic a*se on my forehead. Then again, I was playing a Klingon.
wear what you feel comfortable in.

i dress smart but casual when i go to the theatre! xx
You should dress between business casual and cocktail. Ladies usually wear skirts or dresses. You could wear a dressy pant suit but no jeans, khakis, etc.
Depends on what night you go.

Matinees and weekday night shows I would say skirt, blouse, etc.

No jeans or pants for the ladies.

For a Friday or Sat. night performance usually it's formal dresswear, like evening gowns and tux.
i wud say smart casual. but something comfy too. i usually wear smart trousers and a top or jumper and shoes.
How bout a fur coat and no knickers?
It depends on what sort of production you are going to see. People dress up for Opera from evening dresses and suits to smart clothing. Most other productions you can wear whatever you want, some people wear casual jeans while others wear business dress or smart/casual.

There is no dress code as such - just wear what you feel comfortable in and enjoy yourself!
Dress up nicely,, depends on the theatre,, but looking smart is the best.
I would wear anything black.
Smart Casual Normally does the Trick!!
It can depend on the Theatre, most are easy on dress codes. You may wish to make the effort if you have a box or balcony seat, it helps to make it a little more special.
No, dont dress up, but something nice, and casual. Unless youre on a hot date, then Id wear something a little more sexy....BUT not slutty.
I always like to dress up for the theatre. I wear my fur coat and a lovely skirt or dress with stockings and a nice pair of boots or high heels. These days I've noticed people coming in all sorts of casual wear, even jeans. I guess it's up to you.
Dress-Casual is usually acceptable.
if you don't know what "business casual" looks like

for men it means dress slacks, a shirt and tie and dress shoes

for women it means either a conservative edgy look or a nice dress
a nice slacks with a dressy shirt is acceptable. yes its a nice place. no jeans or bummy clothes.
I went last night and wore jeans with a smart top
Not a swimming costume
it depends on the theatre. If u go to a local play, then a causal wear is the right fashion. At a nice high level one, no sneakers white socks, jeans, mini skirts, or anything with overly flashy jewelry. It may be dark, but u still want to make a statement about yourself
Afternoon performance: business casual.

Evening Performance: dress up a bit more. Evening performances are more formal. Black slacks/shirt and a formal top.
weird or arty (square!) glasses should do the trick. They give every outfit a dramatic touch! The only prob is everyone will be wearing them!
depends where you are going. i wouldn't wear a ballgown to an avart garde production in a pub.
It makes it more of a night out if you dress up a little, but really, you're free to wear what you want. (Except a comically large hat.)

All that matters is that you're going to the theatre! The actors won't care what you wear so long as you're quiet and respectful. And unwrap your candy before the lights go down.
Recent triips to the theatre (both West End and Fringe) has shown me that there is no longer any code whatsoever, and people just wear anything.

This is a great pity as it means that the sense of occasion is very much reduced.
Think "Sunday Best" and you'll be safe.
It's really too bad that people don't want to dress up anymore.

When i go to a movie at a theatre it hurts my eyes, like they feel strained and i start to feel sick.

same thing when i am on the computer in a dark room or driving at night with headlights in the rearveiw. what could be causing this eye strain ? it makes my eyes feel the same as when you try to look at the tip of your nose for a long time or read something that is way to close to your face. it is very annoying, i cant afford to go to a doctor right now and i am worried about this, its been going on for about a year now and seems like its a little worse as time has gone on. what does this sound like?

Sounds like you are far-sighted.

This creates eyestrain, particularly with near tasks and makes nighttime vision blurry.

Ask around about a good optometrist. Some of the El-Cheapo chains give shoddy exams, some give great exams....it all depends on the doctor. Get a recommendation, as far-sighted exams for people under 40 can be tricky for some doctors.

FYI--a basic exam in my area is anywhere from $45 to $120, just so you know what you're up for.

I don't think there's an open one in Orlando, but the Silver Moon in Lakeland is still open. Here's a link to the movies now showing:

Also, in Dade City the Joylan is open:

I have a new SONY DAV-DZ230 Home Theatre System and the DVD tray will not open, display reads cannot

Try unplugging the unit, leave off for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and see if it reboots and opens. If this doesn't work, it may be best to take the unit back to the store.

Never. I like to wait until it comes out on DVD. also I h8t theaters because i don't like watching with a lot of other people
in the summer, about once a week... during the school year, rarely ever
In the summer weekly. In the winter maybe once a month. I take my kids to the movies weekly or more during the summer
I've watched 4 movies in the span of four weeks.

Firstly it was Hot Fuzz, and Transformers. Then it was Harry Potter %26amp; The Order of the Phoneix and after that, a Korean movie!

Hot Fuzz was the first movie I watched at the cinema this year. Before this, it was In Her Shoes all the way back in '06!
i like to watch them at the movie theater. only because i want to get out the house and have some fun. but i still wouldn't mind watching it at home either.
Once or twice a year. I never went to the movies until I was in college, so I suppose I have a lot of catching up to do. lol. But I'd rather just wait until I can watch it on netflix.
before i use to go everyweek now maybe once a month at the most

Who thinks there should be more life-changing theatre that instructs and influences social change?

Life changing theatre would be a wonderful thing. The problem is that it's hard to write. It's almost impossible to write that kind of play without it becoming ponderous. The audience doesn't want to get beaten over the head with your message, so the writing can't be to heavy handed. And trying to write "Life changing" theatre is a bit of a trap, because what changes MY life might not change YOURS. It might be better to try and make an accurate portrayal of whatever your issue is (AIDS, Racism, Baby Seal Clubbing) and just throw it out there. See what happens. Somebody will have a life change because of it. There are people who saw Fast Times at Ridgemont High as a life changing experience, so it's not something you can really plan for. So, write your play, put it out there, Hope for the best.

Who thinks there should be more life-changing theatre that instructs and influences social change?events

of course i do because i do this kind of theater..............

Who thinks there should be more life-changing theatre that instructs and influences social change?home theatre opera theater

Oh please.... Don't bore me with your production, and don't ask me to perform.
Yes there should be more productions like Rent out there!
While I think there is a place for socially conscious live theater and plays, personally, I don't want to pay up to $100 for a lecture on social consciousness.
That would be great! Something thought-provoking. I'd like that better than mere "spectacle."
Read the Fervent Years by Harold Clurman. Theatre for social change was what the Group Theatre in the 30's was all about. That company gave us the likes of Elia Kazan, Lee Strasberg, Clurman, etc...

If you study your theatre history, you'll see a familiar pattern. A theatrical genre will find rebirth in confirming our humanity and reflecting the human condition. Over time however, we tend to skew toward the over blown and spectacular. "Same as it ever was."

One problem is that it is so cost prohibitive to produce new work. As a rule you'll find the most provocative theatre taking place in regional theaters across the country. New York is too expensive.
Wow ... social change.

Theater was once quite powerful before television came along so I'll fight my cynicism and try another tact.

I think the goal should be the cathartic experience ... the energy flowing from the performer to the audience back to the performer, like a building loop.

I think audiences have always had to be told "this is good, you should go see it" before they see it. It's like saying to a kid, "yum, yum I sure love spinach".

I think there needs to be a certain level of sophistication in our audience so they can understand the different levels of material being performed. Sure, I can enjoy a piece of classical music but only with training will I really "get it" -- why people don't understand this is true for dance and theater is beyond me.

I think due to the internet that there is a shift away from television and it's impact has not yet been noted (besides monday night football moving to espn). But I think eventually, people will leave the house again for some community communing at the theater, ballet, jazz clubs. Perhaps audience participation will be the key.

I do have hope for theater ~ it's a wonderful way of story telling. As a vehicle I think it's been kinda stuck, the experimentation has been indulgent and, most likely, the talent has gone to hollywood.
Theatre should be entertaining, engaging, compelling, and thought-provoking. However, nobody -- not theatre artists nor thaetre audiences -- wants to subsist on a steady diet of "lesson" plays. Every now and again, you need to toss in something that's just plain old FUN.

It's nice to think that, as theatre artists, we can make a difference and influence social change. However, one needs to be realistic. Frankly, if the audience leaves a play with which I've been involved, and they're still thinking/talking about it a couple of days later...I reckon I've done my job.
um. yes. this is what it should do and can do. "theatre is not a mirror held up to society but a hammer which to shape it" - brecht. i ask what theatre can do better than movies, try to find its allies. it's not broadway spectacle. it's real people in space with other people. interaction. movies can't do that. can i plug my company? www.outwardspiral.org

What is your impression of someone majoring in Theatre?

My impression is they are getting a liberal arts degree in a fun and fascinating field. A theater degree (like my economics degree) will probably not be of specific use when it comes time to actually earning a living. Maybe - but those are exceptionally talented or exceptionally lucky people and more likely a combination of the two. Anyhow theater is as challenging as any other major and college is the time to explore what you love. Do it!

Theater majors are normally cool people here. Kind of quiet in the more academic classes but definitely outgoing and happy.
Do You want fries with that?
Really now.

Most people look at acting and philosophy as major wastes of time.

Why?

Acting is a hit or miss profession and there was a time when in order to be an actor you had to be a prostitute as well. Perhaps, they are picturing you naked, hence the "Ooooohs".

As for philosophy, it qualifies you to do nothing but ask questions. Unless you stay in school for the rest of your life that is a wasted talent, that is of course unless you get paid on this site. Are you getting paid on this site? I didn't think so.

Next time they ask tell them you are studyng to be a proctologist. That way they will be careful not to show their behinds to you.

Enjoy.

How to determine BEST screen size for home theatre projector viewing?

I have a new projector and I'm looking to play HD dvd's on it. Given distance X how would I determine the optimum screen size and dimensions?

How to determine BEST screen size for home theatre projector viewing?globe theater

Lacking the necessary information it would be nearly impossible for anyone to specify the “best” screen size for your specific application. There are numerous, often interrelated factors—some obvious, some not so obvious—that are involved in selecting the proper projection screen. If your projector has less than 1080p “Full HD” capability and/or lacks sufficient light output for your viewing environment, you may experience difficulty in obtaining the optimum (or “best”) screen size for your specific application.

Nevertheless, I suggest that if you prefer the simplest (though not necessarily the “best”) solution then you should skip to the bottom of my answer and use one or more of the projection calculators that I’ve listed below in order to quickly determine the best screen size for your specific application. Otherwise, if you are interested in the details behind selecting the optimal projection screen please read on and take the opportunity to read some of the resources that I’ve provided.

(Note: if you are using a 1080p projector then a 120-inch wide, 137.7-inch diagonal, 16:9 screen, as recommended above, will require that the closest viewer sit no closer than approximately 208 inches or roughly 17 ft. from the screen; and this distance will be even greater for a lower resolution projector! Furthermore, in a typical residential viewing environment most consumer grade projectors, under nominal operating conditions, are unable to produce sufficient light output to properly illuminate a high performance screen as large as 120 inches wide.)

In determining the optimal screen size (and projector) you would start with the more limiting factors such as the viewing environment - which includes room size, ambient lighting, and the maximum anticipated audience size and seating arrangement, as well as the horizontal and vertical offset of the projector.

Another important part of the process that plays a role in determining screen size is the field of view relative to one or more observers. The field of view is the angle that subtends the left and right edges of the screen relative to an observer (seated in a viewing position through which an imaginary perpendicular centerline extends from the center of the screen.) Assuming normal human visual acuity1 the absolute minimum field of view for the FARTHEST seated observer is 20° (which requires not less than a 720p projected image); and ideally should be at least 30° (which requires not less than a 1080p projected image.) It is important to note that in an effort to minimize fatigue and discomfort the maximum field of view should not exceed 60° for the CLOSEST seated observer regardless of the projected image resolution. The basic rule of thumb is that the higher the image resolution the greater the flexibility you’ll have when it comes to laying-out your audience seating. Furthermore, if a person wishes to achieve the most immersive viewing experience the recommended field of view between the viewer(s) and the screen should be between 30 and 40 degrees approximately. Again, this requires a high definition display system that is capable of reproducing a full 1920×1080 or higher video image without exposing viewers to discernable picture structure when viewers are seated at the proper viewing distance.

Other important factors include: the source material (not all source material is filmed, mastered and/or encoded equally); the accuracy and effectiveness of video and image processing, whether from the projector, an outboard video processor, or a disc player; the lens throw of the projector; and of course your budget.

Also, when calculating the minimum and maximum fields of view you will need to start by choosing a screen aspect ratio that best matches the video content that you will be viewing. For example there is no point in purchasing a 1.33:1 AR screen if the majority of the content you intend to watch is encoded in the 35 mm “scope” or anamorphic (2.35:1 or 2.40:1 AR) format. So if you’re watching mostly movies from any of the optical disc formats then you may be best served by choosing a 1.85:1 “letterbox” projection screen. If you will be watching a mix of video source material then I recommend that you get either the widest AR screen (2.35:1) or the tallest AR screen (1.33:1) and use a “masking” system for those occasions where you will be watching content framed in alternate aspect ratios.

Once you’ve decided on the optimal screen aspect ratio then you’ll need to choose a screen type. You will want the best contrast ratio performance for your viewing environment and projector, along with the desired viewing angle specification and screen gain. In general the higher the screen gain the narrower the viewing angle. That said, I highly recommend that you avoid any screen gain greater than 1.3 otherwise you will begin to compromise the projected image fidelity. To quote the well-respected industry expert Joe Kane: “the ideal contribution of the screen to the display of information should be neutrality and uniformity.”

Da-Lite recommends a home theater viewing distance of six (6) screen heights for the last row of seating and two (2) screen heights for the first row of seating. (Note: two screen heights will likely result in visible picture structure to the closest viewer. Regardless of the viewing conditions a viewing distance of only two screen heights will require an image resolution of 2560×1600 or greater in order to avoid the annoyance of visible picture structure.) Nevertheless, once you know your seating arrangement, which is dictated in part by the room dimensions combined with the light output and resolution of your projector, you can derive the approximate height of your desired projection screen. At this point, depending on your choice of screen aspect ratio, you can quickly determine the desired width.

Also keep in mind that light obeys the inverse power law and—all things being equal—the longer the throw, as is required to produce an image on a larger size screen, the lower the screen illuminance. For the sake of comparison, the target white screen illuminance for “digital cinema” applications, as recommended by SMPTE 431-1, should be 14 fL (or 48 cd/m2 = 48 nits) ±7% as measured at the center of the screen and not less than 80% of the center value at the corners and sides.

Since you already own a projector please be aware that, given the complexity involved in properly choosing an optimal screen and projector combination for a given viewing environment, you may very well require the assistance of a professional with expertise in projection screens or systems.

Hopefully whichever screen you choose will provide a good match for your projector and your viewing environment. As mentioned above you may find any of the projection calculators that I’ve listed below to be helpful.

1Based on empirical data derived from extensive research on human visual performance the accepted norm for human visual acuity for a person with normal vision is approximately 1 minute of arc (or MOA or arcminute.) Since no viewer should be sitting so close as to see the picture structure (such as individual picture elements, i.e. pixels or horizontal scan lines) then it is relatively straightforward to calculate a ‘no closer than’ limit for viewing distance.

How to determine BEST screen size for home theatre projector viewing?oper opera theater

At least an X for optimal movies experience. Go to the movie theater and check it out for yourself - the best seats - to my taste - are about the same distance form the screen as it's diagonal size.

Widescreen - dimensions depend on your projector capabilities.

But you should seek an advise from the professional installer.
1. sit at your favourite spot

2. Measure the distance from the wall. Mark it (horizontally) so that it's just within your field of vision just to be sure nothing is in the way. Usually a 1 to 1 ratio works fine (sit 4' away, screen can be 4' wide)

3. mark about 3' from the ground to be the bottom of the screen and measure how high up you can go.

if the width to height available ratio is at least 16:9, your good to go.

eg. If you're sitting 10' away, you screen can be up to 10' wide. If you have at least 5.6' height, then you can have a 10' x 5.6' screen. Otherwise, go as wide as the height allows you to go.

Then when you go buy a screen, it's usually specified in inches diagonally.
There are 2 theories:

THX: try to create a 23 degree edge to edge

SMTP: Based on visual acuity

Try the viewing distance calculator below to get both numbers.

How much does it cost, in total, to build a drive-in theatre?theatre opera theater

Drive in theatres are going out not coming in. Make it a driving range instead.
Land is the biggest cost.

Beyond that, a projection booth, a low-frequency FM trnasmitter so the patrons can listen to the movie on the car radio, and screens.

Land aside, the theatre, including signage, would be in the quarter million neighborhood.
That depends, you need to find a commercial lot zoned for businesses. You'll have to google outdoor theater screens or something to find a manufacturer and get some prices...same with the projection/radio equipment. You'll just have to call around and get estimates for all of the items needed, then figure up a total. Good luck! I wish there were more drive-ins! :)
$454,352.96
Around 3 or 4 million I would think.
that would be a good question for a present qwener of a drive-in he or she would know more than I would.

Are Loge seats Row CC upper right mez good at the Gershwin Theatre for Wicked? Very nervous about them.?opera ticket

You'll certainly see everything from a wide angle, but that is a BIG theatre (one of the biggest in New York). Decent seats, but not ideal. This theatre is bigger than all of the other Broadway theatres - it's deep. Row CC would be in the front mezz, not the rear, so that's kinda better. Think of it as being near the front of the balcony, only the balcony is a ways back from the stage. (That is, it doesn't overhang the orchestra seats much - it's further towards the back of the theatre.)

Can you help me figure out what's wrong with my home theatre system?

If that's what you'd call it.

I'm not sure about model numbers but i'll give you a general description first of my setup then tell you the problem.

I've a Philips 32 inch HD TV and a philips dvd player. There's no stand alone amp. The 5.1 speakers run straight of the DVD player. As you could guess the TV is hooked up by a SCART connection.

When i use the speakers for my tv it works fine but the trouble occurs when i use my playstation. I have it connected to the TV through HDMI. When I slect the HDMI imput channel the sound from my Playstation doesn't come through to my speakers. Instead I still get the sound from whatever TV station the TV was tuned to before i selected HDMI.

I thinks it's a problem with the TV because whenever I plug in headphones i have to mute the audio in order to stop the tv from playing through its own speakers.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help.

Can you help me figure out what's wrong with my home theatre system?violin

It sure does sound like you TV is broken. When you select HDMI it should switch both video and audio and not just video. One other possibility is firmware. HDTV's have turned into mini computers and it is possible the programming in it has gone haywire. You might want to check the manufacturer's web site to see if there are firmware upgrades for your set.

I would ask her if she is waiting for someone. If she is not tell her that you hate going to movies alone and ask if she feels the same. Perhaps the two of you could go in and sit together so you don't look like losers that can't get dates.

See how it goes from there.

What row is the best at the IMAX theatre?

Well, "best" is quite subjective and a personal preference. In the theater I've been to, I prefer the center about 1/2 to 2/3rds back from the screen. My goal is to completely fill my field of vision with the screen and I've found this place fits the bill for me.

Just get in line early so you don't get stuck in the front row and miss most of the show, or end up needing some chiropractic work on your neck from straining.

Why are role of masks important in Greek theatre?

The performers relied a lot on masks because many people in the audience couldn't hear what was being said. The people in the cheap seats were so far away that they had to rely on masks, body langauge, etc. to distinguish what the different characters' roles were and what part they were playing in the performance.

Why are role of masks important in Greek theatre?concert tickets

It added a bit of anonymity to the actors and also to represent important facial expressions!!!

Why are role of masks important in Greek theatre?theater seating opera theater

The best way to explain and understand mask work is to do it. I found that it made little sense until I worked with one in college. It is amazing what the body does to emote when it is behind a mask - we rely SO much on our facial expressions and our voices when we act that it is incredible to see how you truly can portray character without those things - try it....you'll see. It is awesome.
masks are used to identify one's character. it is also used to identify certain emotions they are portraying, because theater during that time are big and it is hard for the audience to see the emotion the actors are portraying. also women during that time are not prominent in theater, so men do their jobs acting both man and woman roles.
Everything above is correct so far . The distance, and conveyance to the audience. There was another standard that was presented as well;

1. Comedian = redhead

2. Hero = blond

3. Villain = brunette
The masks were a part of the costume. It was them which expressed the feelings of the actor. The actors didn't use their own faces to express the feelings, they were wearing these masks and the expression was permanent. The masks are a characteristic of the ancient Greek theatre which made every role of the play be an ideal personality. That makes them so important. Finally, in ancient Greece there were no female actors. That's why some men played female roles using the masks to have a woman's face.
Actors and the members of the chorus used them to identify persons, characters personality or emotions.

All actor were men so they needed them to play the female roles.

Some times actors were few and had to put on different masks, in order to play more roles.

More info in the link
mask were used a lot because all parts were played by mem
That is what was used in Greek theatre. There were only a few actors in early performances (3, I believe, was the maximum). They had to use masks to change characters. The masks were also used so that people in the back part of the huge theatre could tell the difference between characters.

They also used shoes that made them taller so that they could be seen.

This is a HUGELY interesting subject (at least to me). I suggest going to your local library and checking out some books on the subject!

I need a starting point on a Home Theatre setup. See details.?

Have: LG 42” 1080p

Will have: Linux based MythTV system w/ optical drive %26amp; required audio %26amp; video h/w (but suggestions on the h/w setup would not be unwelcome but not the point of this Q)

Need: AV stuff, including speakers

What I'm looking for are some suggestions on the speakers %26amp; other AV stuff. Some starting point. Quite willing, and expect to have, to do the “leg work” but what are some of the pitfalls? What are the Do's and Don'ts? Eg, (1) packages vs individual components? (2) Is there a minimum spend below which all is sh1t? (3) Maximum spent above which all is a ****? (4) Known lemons? (5) Other traps for the unwary / beginner? (6) Last weekend saw some Bose stuff. Good but, OMG, the $'s. What about B%26amp;O? Others?

Thx in advance.

I need a starting point on a Home Theatre setup. See details.?amc theatre

Avoid Bose -- you can do better for less $. B%26amp;O is high on style but not the best performance (Better than Bose). Consider Klipsch, KEF, Infinity, Polk, etc.

Plan to spend about 40-50% of budget on speakers, 25-30% on receiver and the rest on cables, DVD player, surge protector.

Used amp/receiver/speakers can all be a good deal -- you can get good name brand speakers particularly for a fraction of the price of new.

Avoid all-in-one units if you can. While price point is good, you give up flexibility (e.g. what do you do when the DVD dies? What inputs to connect other equipement do you get?) and usually get mediocre quality and performance.

Don't expect to get reasonable surround speakers and a receiver for much under $750. But you won't need to go over about $3000. for a good setup.

Read reviews ... lots of reviews. Focus on good performance for the $. Then go and listen. Spekares are what YOU like, but you need to hear them. Receivers are relatively easy and can be bought on the basis of name barnd, features and review opinion.

Above all consider the process fun ... and don't be afraid to mix and match components ... connectivity is pretty standard.

I hope that helps a bit.

I need a starting point on a Home Theatre setup. See details.?symphony opera theater

1- Packages are great if you dont care about the quality of the sound and video and you want an easy solution. Its also cheaper. If you want something better or get the most for your money then individual components is the way to go.

2- Ofcourse, but that minimum will be different for everyone. Just like everything that you buy. In my opinion anything less than $1,000 on a reciever and $1,500 pair of speakers is sh!t. Even then its crap compared to whats good. Like a $15,000 car is a good entry level car but its crap compared to a 7 series BMW.

3- Sorry but there is no maximum. $50,000 Linn speakers sound amazing, speacilly with the $11,000 Cd player (yes, CD player). The more you can spend the better.

4- No, just make sure you dont buy something that is fake. Just because a brand has a site doesnt make it real either. Check with your local AV shops.

5- Yes, use your common sense. Wires are really important in a home theater setup but it doesnt matter how good your wires is if your equipment sucks the wire wont make it better. You need to get accesories and equipment that is all the same in quality/price. +$300 wires is not going to make your home theater in a box sound or look better. Also, Bose is not as good as their reputation. Bose uses people lack of knowledge and experience against them. They are very well marketed but they are not very good. Spend your money on something else.

6- Like I said, Bose is not good. If by B%26amp;O you are talking about bang-olufsen then yes, they are ok much better than Bose but I am pretty sure they are more expensive than Bose. In order for me to recommend a brand you need to tell me what is your price range. I know your now a high end guy so I can recommend you some products that are excellent, not pricey and better than whats at your local best buy and circuit city. For reciever I recommend Integra and for speakers Paradigm. Paradigm has a full range of speakers from very inexpensive to very expensive. Their quality is great. Integra is Onkyo's higher end brand. I have never seen an Integra lemon or break down. They are compirable to the elito, denon and all those "higher end" oriental brands. Out of all of them I think integra is the best.

Which is the best brand for a home theatre television?

The best TV out on the market right now is the Sony SXRD (LCoS), but it is most likely out of your budget.

If you are looking for flat, LCD or plasma is really the only way to go. If you are thinking LCD, the best right now is the Sony Bravia, followed by the Sharp Aquos which is slightly cheaper and for an entry level, look for further than Westinghouse. All will make a great solid buy in the 32" range, it just depends how much you want to spend vs how much better you think one from the other is.

For the money you are looking to spend, I wouldn't even bother with plasma. You can get some great plasma for affordable prices with Pansonic, in their commercial line-up. Though, they run around $2.5k and go up from there. I wouldn't bother with any other plasma near that price range, the next step up would be a Pioneer or Fujitsu, which are way out of your price range.

If you don't mind the size, CRT TVs still produce the best picture out there, nothing can touch them yet. Only down side, size (depth) and weight.

True HD is 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1080 (1080i/p).

All LCDs that are HD can do the true HD resolution. While any HD plasma 42" or smaller is limited to about 1024 x 768, which is not a true HD resolution.

Which is the best brand for a home theatre television?imax theatre

Bose and Sony

Which is the best brand for a home theatre television?performing show opera theater

bose
Best Bang for the Buck for screen sizes 50 inches or more is DLP technology. LG and Samsung make excellent quality sets.

DLP's have modest depth of about 16", but fit nicely into a corner viewing arrangement. Mine is so bright that even with my huge south facing widows, no window coverage at all is required. A matte finish screen is better than a glossy one to avoid seeing reflections. Instead of the screen wearing out like plasma sets, only the $250 projection lamp wears out after about 6000 hrs.
TV's...like speakers...are very subjective. There are several great brands out there such as Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.

The best thing to do is go and check them out to see which picture appeals to you the best. This can be tricky, because they are not always well maintained at the store. Still each person has their own idea of which picture looks the best...so find the one that's best for YOU!

Well, there are about a bazillion upbeat songs for you, my Soprano friend (I'm an Alto 2 myself, and having issues finding stuff low enough for me) I would suggest 'Out Tonight', from RENT, especially if you don't have to worry about little kids hearing it.

Does a 2.1 channel,1000 watts home theatre speakers hav good sound quality?

It depends on the brand, but as far as power is concerned I'm sure 1000 watts is more than enough

Does a 2.1 channel,1000 watts home theatre speakers hav good sound quality?tickets

you cannot judge a home theatre based on how many watts of power it can output.

1000 watts will be a peak power rating anyway unless the amp weighs about 30 kilos. lol.

look for brand, price, reputation, read online reviews, and go to a store and have a listen before you purchase. if you can find something that you are happy with go for it. I would recommend a 5.1 speaker system if you are going to use it as a home theatre though. those extra 3 channels will give you a bitter 'theatre' experience.

I think I saw it in the book; "Thirty Famous One-Act Plays"

Yeah, I just found the book and it's in there.

What was the reason or reason's for theatre's downfall?

I recently read Arthur Miller's Memoirs in which he mentioned how when 'Death of a Salesman' was on Broadway, it showed to full houses every night, and he was making about $20,000 a week in royalties. The idea that a 'serious' play could have such an impact today seems basically 'zero' today. I've heard the arguments about ticket prices, competition from film, tv, but could the reason be that people no longer have a 'suspension of disbelief' but rather think that it's pretty dumb to watch real live people acting in front of you pretending they're saying and doing things that are just made up since it's so obvious that they are just 'acting.' And a related point, is there any playwright in the U.S. that can make a living just writing plays and not teach or write screenplays/teleplays as well.

What was the reason or reason's for theatre's downfall?concerts

If anything I think live theater is MORE believable for people because they don't have their house around them while they're watching -- they're fully immersed in the moment, along with hundreds of other people.

There are still a few serious plays that wow the critics, but the sheer cost of live theater vs the ease of DVD/TV means that many of them (Proof, Jersey Boys) end up getting made into movies. Even the goofy ones like The Producers end up as movies (where they often fail) even though they play to packed houses for years.

So it's not theater that's fallen, it's Serious theater. Maybe the world is in a phase where we need escape more than we need to be made thoughtful.

What was the reason or reason's for theatre's downfall?headache opera theater

Published books. Newspapers. Radio. Television. Movies. Internet. In that order.

Edit: Eh maybe movies a little before television. People went to the movie theater before they had household televisions.
