Why is it unlucky to whistle in a theatre dressing room?

It's bad luck to whistle in any part of a theatre. In the old days before walkie talkies, stage hands used to communicate with each other by whistling. So if you whistled in a theatre you might inadvertently signal a set piece to fly in and someone might get taken out.

What a stupid superstition! Only religious people would come up with something so idiotic.
i heard you get hit with pies if you do
Of all theatre superstitions, here's one that actually has some basis in fact.

Because sailors used to commonly take jobs working the "flies" (i.e., the rigging) in theatres, and because they used to communicate with one another by whistling, it's commonly thought to be bad luck to whistle in the theatre for fear of confusing the stagehands.
Goalkeepers have to have their favourite toy in the net during a match. It's superstition. It guards afainst something bad happening.
