It depends on the brand, but as far as power is concerned I'm sure 1000 watts is more than enough

you cannot judge a home theatre based on how many watts of power it can output.
1000 watts will be a peak power rating anyway unless the amp weighs about 30 kilos. lol.
look for brand, price, reputation, read online reviews, and go to a store and have a listen before you purchase. if you can find something that you are happy with go for it. I would recommend a 5.1 speaker system if you are going to use it as a home theatre though. those extra 3 channels will give you a bitter 'theatre' experience.
