Close to 5 months on average; but there are exceptions. Most studios hold up major movies for the holiday gift giving seasons (Sept-Dec for Christmas and March for Easter presents for the kids movies).

Sometimes a studio can't wait for the holidays. If they have a weak slate of movies going into the theaters, the studio will try to boost its quarterly profits by releasing a blockbuster DVD. Conversely if the movie was a major blockbuster, the studio might wait for the ticket sales to die down. "Jurassic Park" didn't make it to the stores until the following summer after its theatrical release.

If a movie has to do with Christmas, studios will wait almost a year to release it. Case in point "Santa Clause 3" is still waiting to hit the stores. Religious movies get an Easter release date like "Passion Of The Christ" did. War epics often get released for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.

anywhere between 3-7. Lord of the Rings I think was about 7 months. Most movies to me would be around 4-5 months. Hope this helps.
3-6 months
depends on the popularity of the movie and when studios decide to release it.

for example: Pirates 3 was in theaters this summer, but Disney isn't releasing it on dvd until 12/6 so it's during the Xmas shopping season. On the other hand, Wild Hogs came out in theaters around the same time and just came out on dvd yesterday.
usually 3-4 months, but it really depends on the popularity of the movie.
