What is the acceptable dress code for the theatre?

do you have to dress up these days? - how informal can you be?

I went a few weeks ago, and wore a casual skirt and blouse....I guess it is what some might call "business casual"

This is the 21st century. You can wear anything from casual to formal.
I've been to the theatre and I wore nice pants and a nice top. It's typically not good etiquette to wear jeans.

Basically, dress like you were going for a job interview.
It kind of depends on what kind of theatre and what kind of play you are going to. If it is a play at a high school or something, you can definitely go very casual. If it is a community theatre of some sort you can be casual to business casual. If it is broadway, dress up! have fun
formal/business attire, smart casual or semi-formal (rarely used)
I once went wearing a tight red bodysuit and a prosthetic a*se on my forehead. Then again, I was playing a Klingon.
wear what you feel comfortable in.

i dress smart but casual when i go to the theatre! xx
You should dress between business casual and cocktail. Ladies usually wear skirts or dresses. You could wear a dressy pant suit but no jeans, khakis, etc.
Depends on what night you go.

Matinees and weekday night shows I would say skirt, blouse, etc.

No jeans or pants for the ladies.

For a Friday or Sat. night performance usually it's formal dresswear, like evening gowns and tux.
i wud say smart casual. but something comfy too. i usually wear smart trousers and a top or jumper and shoes.
How bout a fur coat and no knickers?
It depends on what sort of production you are going to see. People dress up for Opera from evening dresses and suits to smart clothing. Most other productions you can wear whatever you want, some people wear casual jeans while others wear business dress or smart/casual.

There is no dress code as such - just wear what you feel comfortable in and enjoy yourself!
Dress up nicely,, depends on the theatre,, but looking smart is the best.
I would wear anything black.
Smart Casual Normally does the Trick!!
It can depend on the Theatre, most are easy on dress codes. You may wish to make the effort if you have a box or balcony seat, it helps to make it a little more special.
No, dont dress up, but something nice, and casual. Unless youre on a hot date, then Id wear something a little more sexy....BUT not slutty.
I always like to dress up for the theatre. I wear my fur coat and a lovely skirt or dress with stockings and a nice pair of boots or high heels. These days I've noticed people coming in all sorts of casual wear, even jeans. I guess it's up to you.
Dress-Casual is usually acceptable.
if you don't know what "business casual" looks like

for men it means dress slacks, a shirt and tie and dress shoes

for women it means either a conservative edgy look or a nice dress
a nice slacks with a dressy shirt is acceptable. yes its a nice place. no jeans or bummy clothes.
I went last night and wore jeans with a smart top
Not a swimming costume
it depends on the theatre. If u go to a local play, then a causal wear is the right fashion. At a nice high level one, no sneakers white socks, jeans, mini skirts, or anything with overly flashy jewelry. It may be dark, but u still want to make a statement about yourself
Afternoon performance: business casual.

Evening Performance: dress up a bit more. Evening performances are more formal. Black slacks/shirt and a formal top.
weird or arty (square!) glasses should do the trick. They give every outfit a dramatic touch! The only prob is everyone will be wearing them!
depends where you are going. i wouldn't wear a ballgown to an avart garde production in a pub.
It makes it more of a night out if you dress up a little, but really, you're free to wear what you want. (Except a comically large hat.)

All that matters is that you're going to the theatre! The actors won't care what you wear so long as you're quiet and respectful. And unwrap your candy before the lights go down.
Recent triips to the theatre (both West End and Fringe) has shown me that there is no longer any code whatsoever, and people just wear anything.

This is a great pity as it means that the sense of occasion is very much reduced.
Think "Sunday Best" and you'll be safe.
It's really too bad that people don't want to dress up anymore.
