Which is the best brand for a home theatre television?

The best TV out on the market right now is the Sony SXRD (LCoS), but it is most likely out of your budget.

If you are looking for flat, LCD or plasma is really the only way to go. If you are thinking LCD, the best right now is the Sony Bravia, followed by the Sharp Aquos which is slightly cheaper and for an entry level, look for further than Westinghouse. All will make a great solid buy in the 32" range, it just depends how much you want to spend vs how much better you think one from the other is.

For the money you are looking to spend, I wouldn't even bother with plasma. You can get some great plasma for affordable prices with Pansonic, in their commercial line-up. Though, they run around $2.5k and go up from there. I wouldn't bother with any other plasma near that price range, the next step up would be a Pioneer or Fujitsu, which are way out of your price range.

If you don't mind the size, CRT TVs still produce the best picture out there, nothing can touch them yet. Only down side, size (depth) and weight.

True HD is 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1080 (1080i/p).

All LCDs that are HD can do the true HD resolution. While any HD plasma 42" or smaller is limited to about 1024 x 768, which is not a true HD resolution.

Best Bang for the Buck for screen sizes 50 inches or more is DLP technology. LG and Samsung make excellent quality sets.

DLP's have modest depth of about 16", but fit nicely into a corner viewing arrangement. Mine is so bright that even with my huge south facing widows, no window coverage at all is required. A matte finish screen is better than a glossy one to avoid seeing reflections. Instead of the screen wearing out like plasma sets, only the $250 projection lamp wears out after about 6000 hrs.
TV's...like speakers...are very subjective. There are several great brands out there such as Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.

The best thing to do is go and check them out to see which picture appeals to you the best. This can be tricky, because they are not always well maintained at the store. Still each person has their own idea of which picture looks the best...so find the one that's best for YOU!
